MMP Trains ACAP Volunteers

Mission Ministries Philippines (MMP) and Action for the  Care and Development of the Poor in the Philippines ( ACAP) conducted another 3-day training seminar for ACAP child monitor volunteers last November 8-10, 2022 at Brgy. San Antionio, Paranaque. This training was participated by more than 20 child monitors from different Barangays in Paranaque. The theme of the said event was “ Learning is Enjoyable, not Endurable”

Ms. Lourdes van der Linden, ACAP Executive Director, welcomed and thank all the participants for attending and encouraged them that the knowledge they will gain will help them to be more effective in their field.

Topics like Child Discipline, Love Language, Anti-bullying, Child Protection Policy, and Different Philosophies in Education made a great impact on the participants.

The participants shared their personal experiences and the challenges they are facing as parents and child monitors.  With the topics presented,  they will be able to supervise the families they are in charge of more effectively if they are aware of their own issues.

In addition to the said seminar, MMP conducted the Reading Seminar using the Marungko Approach via zoom to the teachers of Supervised Neighborhood Play Teachers last December 2, 2022.

ACAP is a non-profit organization working to empower marginalized youth through a combination of education, social development, and health and nutritional feeding programs.

Ms. Kate Pagsolingan, ACAP Program Manager, and Jefferson Balistoy, ACAP Project Officer spearheaded the seminars.

3rd Refresher Course – “Child Discipline in an Online and Face to Face Platform”

One of the many difficulties parents and teachers are encountering nowadays is disciplining the children.  The new normal of teaching made it more challenging for teachers to correct the behaviors of their students. To address this issue, Mission Ministries Philippines had its 3rd refresher course entitled “Child Discipline in an Online and Face to Face Platform” last October 9, 2021, facilitated by Prof. Claribel “Bing” Amihan.

Teacher Bing explained the importance of developing self-discipline in the child by explaining the rules and the benefits of following the rules. The child will be motivated to do what is right no matter how difficult and challenging it is.

The topic was divided into 4 subtopics: a) Definition of terms, b) Characteristics of Children c) Goals of Discipline d) Discipline guidelines e) Take care of the self. Teacher Bing had not only discussed the main topic about discipline but broadened it by explaining on understanding the child and the environment he or she may be in. Adding to the child’s development and how gadgets and the internet have been affecting the child.

The webinar was attended by 100 participants. And due to public request, another date was set last November 27, 2021, to cater to other participants who were not able to attend the first webinar. This was the first time MMP’s webinars had a repeat.

The Path to Success

In its continuing mission to share the good news of salvation to the parents of partner schools of Mission Ministries Philippines, the 5th parenting seminar for this year is The Path to Success, held last September 18, 2021.  Pastor Melita Espanol, teacher and Administrator of JMARS Learning Center in Cavite and pastor of Believers in Christ Church facilitated the seminar.

Pastor Melet said that to be successful is to lay the foundation by believing in God. He should be the center of whatever we will do, especially being a parent. And as God as the greatest foundation we can rely on.

The seminar was attended by 70 participants from 10 partner schools of MMP. To date this is the well-attended parenting seminar conducted by MMP since it started this January.

First Refresher Course – Hurried Child Syndrome

Are you pushing your child to grow too soon? This is the question the seminar like to point out in MMP’s first refresher course seminar entitled “Hurried Child Syndrome : How to build up children without hurrying them” last September 11, 2021. Prof. Elizabeth Anne King- Santos shared her insights founded by studies made on the cause and effects of hurrying the child.

In this seminar Prof. Santos explained that hurrying a child opposes the nature of a child’s development and adds to the stresses and frustrations that a child is suffering.

We need to build up relationship to the child to better understand him/her and how we can help their development. Focus on individual differences, abilities, learning styles and development. Adults should focus on the character of the child rather on their scores or grades. And let the child play as this is the business of a child, they learn through play.

Prof. Santos, holds a Master of Science in Early Childhood Education from Walden University, Minnesota, USA and graduate of Bachelor of Science in Family Life and Child Development at the University of the Philippines with Latin honors have been a regular speaker of MMP seminars.

ACAP – MMP SEMINAR

Mission Ministries Philippines (MMP) and Action for the Care and Development of the Poor in the Philippines (ACAP) joined the venture with a 5-day online seminar held last September 16, 23, 24, 30 and, October 1.

The seminar aims to equip their parent-volunteers in their tutorial projects with the underprivileged children in the communities of Paranaque.

Topics were designed to prepare the volunteers for their mission. In the seminar Ms. Chonabelle Domingo, CEO/President of MMP tackled the Importance of Parenting Education and the Philosophy of Early Childhood Education.  Involvement of parents The in their child’s education is vital with the child’s success.  Ms. Domingo stressed that parents should anchor their strength to God as He is the source of everything and He designed each child with a purpose.  She also discussed the nature of children and how each child develops.

Other topics were Love Languages of Children, Child Discipline, Teaching through Play facilitated by Ms. Aida Acorda, and Reading using the Marungko Approach shared by Ms. Erlyn Isidro.
